River Is Rising
Aug 26, 2013
Shotover River stamped himself as a potential stayer in the making by winning the Ross McNally BM65 Handicap over 2200m at the Sunshine Coast yesterday.
After jumping cleanly and despite over racing in the early stages, jockey Ashley Butler, was able to settle him nicely in third position on the rails, before driving through a narrow gap on the turn to finish strongly and win with ease.
This was the well-bred, 4 year old son of Savabeels’ first attempt at a race beyond 1800m and continued the recent good form of Heran Racing. “He proved to us today that he is a stayer in the making, we have always felt he would stay all day and he showed that today. We think there will be better things in store for him in the future. He has done a great job this time in and will now go for a well earned rest.,” said co trainer Dan Meagher.
“ The stable is really starting to fire now and we have some very nice horses coming along, so I would like to thank all of our staff for the effort they have put in to get us where we are. Also, our apprentice Ashley Butler is doing a fantastic job for us in the saddle and we could not be any happier with the way he is riding at present. I am sure other trainers will be taking note of his capabilities.” commented Meagher.
Meagher Racing has started the 2013/14 season extremely well and from 15 starters has had 3 wins, 3 seconds and 4 thirds, giving it a strike rate of 66% runners to placegetters.
