The Season So Far

Sep 30, 2013

Statistics show that the training partnership of John, Dan and Chris Meagher has started the 2013/2014 racing season in fine fashion. From only 35 runners they have been able to notch up 7 winners, 8 seconds, 6 thirds. This gives them a win/place percentage of 60% to runners, which is outstanding.

Dan Meagher had these comments on the season to date:

We are really happy with the start of the season and the stats show that we are heading in the right direction. If you included fourths and fifths the percentage would be up over 80% to runners.

There are a lot of people who have helped us to get established, the most important being our owners, who have shown great support since we moved to Brisbane. We are so pleased to begin to repay them for this support and feel confident that their horses will continue to run well and win races.

Also we can’t forget our staff, each and every one of them has done a terrific job. Andy, Debbie, Jose, Ash and Mike are great track riders who give us tremendous feedback whilst Paul, Sabrina, Murray, Emma, Deborah, Laurent, Kav, Col and Bruce do a wonderful job on the ground. On the admin side Mum, Kylie and Dave keep everything running smoothly. Last but not least we have Mark McGarry our vet and Steve Crosby our farrier, who both look after the horses as if they were their own.

The horses in work at the moment are predominately made up of 2, 3 and 4 year olds, so it is basically very young team and many of them have not raced as yet, but will in the near future. So we are looking at a pretty exciting time over the next few months as many of these horses make their debuts and the ones that have already raced continue their preparations.

We are also planning to run our horses outside of Queensland in both NSW and Victoria, as this will enable our owners to participate in higher stakes races south of the border. To this end, we have sent Startsmeup and Shotover River to Mornington in Victoria, with Chris going with them to supervise. Both have had one start, with Startsmeup flying home for a 2-length loss at Caufield and Shotover River running a creditable fifth in an unsuitable race at Mornington on the weekend. Both will be having their second starts over the next week or two and we expect them to run very well.

Overall our plan is to place the horses in races that we believe they can win. As such, we are always mindful of what is on offer in the other states and have no hesitation in travelling south if we believe there is a suitable race.

All in all we are pretty excited about the way all of the horses are going at the moment and are looking forward to having many more runners and winners in the coming months.

From now on, at the end of each month we will do a summary of the months highlights, so all of our owners and friends will be up to date with what is happening at Meagher Racing.
