Debutante Comes Home A Winner
Nov 25, 2013
Comacina made the perfect start to his racing career by easily winning the Australian Weaving Mills 1200m Maiden at the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.
After drawing awkwardly, jockey Ashley Butler showed patience and skill to get the three-year-old son of Dane Shadow into a position on the pace and one off the fence after 200m. From there he travelled kindly before forging to the lead in the straight to win easily.
“His work leading into today has been terrific, the only thing we were worried about was the rail being out a long way and his bad barrier draw. But Ashley was able to overcome this and in the end he won quite easily.” commented co trainer Daniel Meagher.
“It was good to come home and have a winner after spending the last month and a half in Melbourne. Also great for the horse to win first up for the owners, who are a great bunch of people and have allowed us to take him along nice and slowly. There will be a few more wins in store for him. He has done a great job this time in and now will go for a break.” Commented Chris Meagher
The race also saw a return to the winner’s circle for the Meagher/Butler trainer/jockey combination.
