After a day at Doomben which saw Meagher Racing saddle up four close seconds, Anniversary Jewel ended the run of outs at the Sunshine Coast by winning the McInnes Wilson Lawyers Class 1 over 1000m.
The New Zealand bred daughter of Danroad was slow into stride and settled towards the rear of the field. Approaching the home turn she then ran into a little trouble as jockey Ashley Butler began to move her into the race, but the gaps opened on straightening and she was able to wear down the leader to win by a short margin.
“She came to us with a bit of a reputation of being a difficult horse. As such, we spent quite a bit of time on her, she has now come our way and is doing most things right. We thought she would run well today, but was a little on the heavy side, so she will take a huge amount of benefit from the race. It is also great for Mr. and Mrs. Focas who have shown a lot of faith in the mare and we would like to thank them for giving us the opportunity to train her.” Commented Dan Meagher.
Chris Meagher was a relived man after the race, revealing that things did not go quite to plan. “We instructed to Ashley to go forward from the good gate. Unfortunately, she was slow into stride and to his credit he didn’t panic and just let her find her feet with only a couple behind her. In the straight I thought, oh no not another second, as she was slowly wearing the leader down. But she came through in the end and showed a lot of courage in doing so.”
