Shantung Boxer provided a knockout blow to favorite backers by winning the Ramsden Lawyers Maiden Plate over 1200m at the Gold Coast. After settling just behind the pace, jockey Ryan Wiggins was able to bring him to the outside of the field on straightening, where he accelerated quickly to claim the lead and hold on for an impressive win.

“ He is a difficult horse to train as he is quite headstrong, but we have been working him on the treadmill, something he seems to enjoy and it has paid dividends. That was only his second start for quite a while as he had some tendon problems, but with some great care and work by Katrina Smith of Heran Racing and vet Mark McGarry, he has overcome these and appears as strong as ever. It is also great to see the patience of Glen and Matt Heran pay off, as they are very good supporters of ours and have put quite a bit of money into their horses.’ Commented Dan Meagher

Chris Meagher was also a happy man after the race saying “He had a huge blow after his first up run so took a heap of improvement from it. As such we were confident he would run well today. Ryan did a great job and it was terrific to see him show a turn of foot the way he did. Based on that run I can’t see why he will not progress through his grades”
