Shantung Boxer showed tremendous courage to win the 1200m Just Cruises World Cruises Class 1 Handicap at the Gold Coast.
Starting from an awkward barrier, the son of Street Sense looked to be trapped wide in the early part of the race, before jockey Sairyn Fawke decided to move forward quickly and sit outside the leader. On straightening, Fawke gave the gelding his head and put a gap on the rest of the field, holding that advantage well to the line.
“He really showed quite a bit of ticker today, as he did it quite tough being caught three wide early. Sairyn did the right thing by going forward once he realised he could not get in, so it was a top effort by the horse to be able to do it at both ends.” Commented stable rep Andy Kermond.
Chris Meagher was also full of praise for the horses and rider. “He has had a few little setbacks, nothing serious so he had to be scratched last start when we thought he had a great chance of winning. But he overcame these quickly and it was a strong win. I was a bit worried when I saw him caught wide, so it was a good move by Sairyn to go forward. He knows the horse well and was obviously confident on what he was capable of. It was also great to get another winner for Heran Racing and a terrific start to the month for the stable. We are hopeful that this month we will have a bit more luck than last and rack up a few more winners.
