Sharpening, unwanted in the betting ring, defied her large odds to score a courageous win in the 1200m Richard Graves Maiden Handicap at the Gold Coast.
Starting from a wide barrier, the daughter of Lonhro flew the gates and jockey Sairyn Fawke was able to get her across without any trouble to be sitting second for most of the journey. From there it became a dogged, two horse struggle all the way down the straight with the Team Meagher trained mare getting up in the last bound.
“That was a terrific win and a big thrill, as to be honest, although we knew she would run well we thought the 1200m of todays’ race would be too short. We instructed Sairyn to go back from the wide gate, as we felt she would be better suited racing that way. But to his credit, once she flew out of the barriers and wanted to run he changed plans quickly and let her go. As such you have to applaud him for using his initiative.” Commented Chris Meagher
“This was only her second start for us and her form before coming up here was nothing to write home about. But her owner Karl Warcon was confident that she had something and he was proven correct today. Her work, jump outs and previous race were very good, the only thing we had some doubt about was the distance of the race today. It is always good to get a winner and credit must go to all our hard working staff, who support us immensely.”
