Red Claw, named after a favourite wine of owners Mary and Neville Bell, showed that he is turning into a more than capable racehorse by winning the Battery Wise Sunshine Coast 3 Year-Old Handicap.
Jockey Brad Stewart, allowed the son of Bianconi to find his feet after jumping, settling towards the rear of the field. After taking the shortcuts along the rail turning for home, Stewart then bought the horse to the outside and despite being a little erratic, was able to get him to the line, winning by a short margin.
"We were not sure about running him today, as Brad said last start that he did not handle the soft going. So it was great that the weather improved and the track was upgraded to Good, as that really helped him. He is much better on firmer tracks and the more he races the better he will become, as he is still not quite sure about everything and does quite a few things wrong in his races. It is always good to win a race for Mary and Neville (Bell), who have been great supporters of us since day one." Commented Chris Meagher
Dan Meagher was also full of praise. " We have a very good opinion of this fellow and he enhanced that today, as he won despite doing a number of things wrong. Brad rode a terrific race and without his experience and horsemanship the result may have been different. We will continue to run him through his grades and we feel he will turn into a very good money spinner, as he will only improve with further racing.
"We were pretty unlucky with Harada Bay yesterday in the Magic Millions Cup, so to get a win today was terrific for the stable, as the boys (Dan and Chris) continue to do a great job. This fellow has still got some untapped ability and the way he is racing we feel he will be better over a bit further ground. So we are looking forward to stepping him up over the coming weeks."
