Red Claw appeared to relish to being ridden on the quiet side, storming home to win the 1400m Class 2 VALSPAR Handicap at the Sunshine Coast. After jumping well, jockey Brad Stewart allowed the son of Bianconi to settle in the second half of the field, before making a run on entering the straight and coming down the centre of the track. Although challenged over the final 100m he "dug deep" and in the end drew away to win easily.
"He has had a few issues and still does quite a few things wrong in his races and we have been continuously tinkering with his gear to get it right. Finally it looks like we have got that side of it right, but I think that the decision to ride him a bit on the quiet side really paid dividends today." Commented co trainer Dan Meagher
Chris Meagher was also pleased to see the horses back in the winners circle. "He is a really "raw" type of horse and I still don't think the penny has completely dropped, so he will continue to improve the more he races. He had some issues last prep and it has taken a while to get him back, so credit must go to our staff and those at Kilto Park (owner Neville Bells' farm) for the work they have put in with him."
"I was great to win another race for Neville (Bell) and his wife, as they have been terrific supporters of ours and have been very patient with this fellow. He has natural ability, but it is a bit difficult to get it out of him sometimes, but I think we have found the key to him now. He will definitely win more races, especially as he matures further."
