A SHOT IN THE ARM

Shotover River showed he has lost none of his staying ability with a strong win in the Wideform Class 5 1800m Handicap at the Gold Coast. Ridden perfectly by Ashley Butler, the son of Savabeel was quickly out of the gates and able to take up a forward position just behind the leaders before storming home for, in what in the end, was an easy win.
“Ashley knows this horse, from his time with us as an apprentice and as such rides him exceptionally well, as was proven today. He has a tendency to over race, but Ash was able to get him to settle and relax behind the pace, enabling him to finish strongly. There were some excuses for his below par run last start, but we were confident he would show his true mettle this time out. He is much better suited to 2000-2200m so winning this race over 1800m the way he did shows that he is right on track to be stepped up now. It was also terrific to win another race for Heran Racing, who have been great supporters of the stable” Commented Dan Meagher.
Chris Meagher was also delighted to see the horse back in the winners stall. “This guy is as honest as the day is long and tries his heart out every time he steps onto the track. It was also great that we were able to get Ashley to ride him and see the old firm back together, as we have had quite a bit of success together. He is a tough stayer, so we will more than likely look at some better type races for him over the coming weeks.”
“This win was an excellent result for the stable and is a culmination of quite a bit of hard work from the boys (Chris, Dan and Paul) along with all the rest of the staff. With the work being done on the new track at Eagle Farm, it has meant we have had to change the way we train to fit in with the changed conditions. Now that we have that fully in hand we are expecting more results like this in the future.” Commented John Meagher
