Shotover River stamped himself as a competitive stayer with a strong performance in winning the 2200m Master Foundation Open Handicap at Doomben. Starting from an awkward gate, jockey Luke Dittman, was able to get the son of Savabeel across to the fence turning out of the straight, where he settled comfortably in third position. As the field approached the 500m mark, Dittman was then able to bring him around the leaders heels and he fought strongly all the way down the straight to win by a short, but comfortable margin.
"This horse has been knocking on the door in town for some time and it was nice to see him finally get a well deserved win. He is not a big horse and has had to carry some hefty weights recently so we decided to use Lukes' 3kg claim and that was probably the difference in the end. Luke rode him exactly how we wanted and his staying power told in the end." Commented Chris Meagher
Co Trainer, Dan Meagher was equally pleased. "It was just so good to see him win in town, he has been dogged by bad barriers and having to carry big weights, but he always gives 100% and is as honest as they come. We are also very pleased for the owners, Heran Racing, as they put a fair bit of money into the game and have been great supporters of our since we arrived here."
"Mick Dittman rode many a winner for me in the past and it was fantastic to see his son, Luke, ride his first for my sons and I. He is a good kid and followed instructions to the letter, which is what you want to see from an apprentice. The horse did a great job today and that 3kg weight relief he had today made a big difference in the end." Commented John Meagher
