Havana Cigar broke his maiden status at his fifth race start by winning the 1600m XXXX Gold Maiden Handicap at the Sunshine Coast. Starting a short priced favourite, the son of Churchill Downs began well and was box seated by jockey Matt McGuren, before working to the line for a narrow win.
"Considering it was his first attempt at 1600m, not having raced for five weeks and giving most of the field 5kgs, it was a really good effort. He has been drawing really bad barriers and we have had to scratch him a number of times, so with him winning he wait was worth it. He is still a bit raw and doesn't know what to do, stopping and starting in his races. But the more he runs the better he will become in that regard." Commented Dan Meagher
"It was a really tough win and great for the owners, who have had to put up with him being scratched so many times. He is a funny horse as he switches on and off even in his work, so Matt did a good job to keep him going when he decided to have a rest 500m from home. From that run it is apparent that he is probably looking for longer and next prep we will tailor his training differently and look for longer races." were co trainer Chris Meaghers' comments.
John Meagher was also extremely happy with the result and the way the stable is going. "The season is only 6 days old and so far we have had 5 runners for 3 wins and two placings, so things are looking good at the moment. It is a credit to our staff for all the hard work they have put in."
