Cruising Speed, at only her second race start, broke her maiden status by easily accounting for her rivals in the 1350m Sky Thoroughbred Central Fillies & Mares Maiden Handicap at Doomben. Jumping straight to the front, Brad Stewart was able to dictate terms before sprinting away at the top of the straight and cruise to an easy win, without being fully extended.
"We had a fair amount of confidence in her doing that today, so it was great to see it actually happen. At her first start over 1000m she missed the start and was caught wide, so it was a forgive run from that point of view. After that race we picked this out, as it gave us the opportunity to give her a couple of jump outs and teach her a bit more. Being by Savabeel the step up to the 1350m also really suited." John Meagher was also pleased to see the filly score. "The penny still has not dropped with this girl, so for her to do what she did was a very good effort. She was a bit stirred up before the race and had her ears pricked the whole way around, showing that she was still not sure of what was going on, so will improve a great deal again, experience wise. I must give a lot of credit to the boys and the staff, who have been really putting in the long hours, so to get this winner is a great reward."
"It is always good to get a winner for the Ontrack Team, who are great supporters of our stable. This filly has a bright future, especially as she steps up in distance. As usual, Brad summed things up quickly after the gates opened and was not concerned about going to the front, where he rated her perfectly." Commented Dan Meagher.
