The Iliad repaid his new owners with a fighting win in the 1400m TJM Scaffolding Class 5 Handicap at the Gold Coast. The race was run at a solid tempo, which allowed jockey Matt McGuren to settle at the rear of the field and have the horse travelling kindly. On turning for home and in a race winning move, McGuren decided to stay close to the fence and take the gaps as they appeared, resulting in a late surge and a narrow, but comfortable win.
With John Meagher in Singapore for son Daniels' first runners and Chris Meagher attending the races at Doomben, stable representative Andy Kermond had the following comments. "We were pretty confident going into this race as his jump outs and work have been excellent. Matt rode the perfect race and everything panned out as we expected. This was probably a bit short for him but we have kept him on the fresh side and that is what made the difference today. He will be much better suited when he gets to 1600m."
"I am really pleased for the owners, especially Dennis Walker, who went down to Sydney with Dad and bought this horse, selling shares to his associates. This was his first start for them and it is so good to get that initial win. He is a very well bred horse and has good ability so he will win more races, especially as we step him up to around 1600m. Its been a good weekend for us with Dan winning a race in Singapore as well." Commented Chris Meagher
