Havana Cigar broke through for his second race win scoring an easy victory in the 1200m Racezone Class 1 Handicap at Eagle Farm. After being driven out of the gates by Meagher stable apprentice Sairyn Fawke, he was able to sit comfortably outside the leader, before rallying in the run home to win by 1.5 lengths.
"Although he has been working very well, we felt that this was was going to be a bit short for him and then it rained and he has never liked soft ground, so I guess the win was a little bit of a surprise. But he is the type of horse that needs to be outside horses and not cluttered up, which was exactly how Sairyn rode him today and that proved to be the winning formula. Although only his second win he has been close on a number of ocaission so he deserves this, as do his owners who have been very patient." Commented co trainer Chris Meagher
"It is always great to win a race and this run will definitely improve this horse and he will be far better suited once he gets to 1400/1600m. Sairyn rode him perfectly today and sitting on the pace outside the leaders is where he performs best. The stable is continuing to produce good performances, although we have been running a few placings lately, so this win is a a real fillup. Again thanks to The staff, who do an amazing job in difficult circumstances." Commented John Meagher
