Brando showed he has the potential to be a promising stayer in the making with a Gutsy win in the 2000m Amicus Cup for 3 Year Olds at Mornington. After starting from the outside barrier, jockey Noel Callow was unable to get in, so had to travel 3 and 4 wide for the whole journey. Despite that, when asked for an effort in the run home, the son of Desert King was still able to "find" and run down the leader on the line.
"It was a terrific effort from him today. I said to Noel to just keep him out of trouble and in clear running and was not that worried that he may be caught wide, as I knew he would just keep going. He must have travelled 2400m today, so staying is definitely his caper, although we did know that all along. He has been a bit unlucky at his previous starts, as it just takes him so long to get going. It was great to win our first race at Mornington, where we are now based and also good to win for Neville Bell, who was happy to send him down to us from Brisbane as he is a VOBIS horse. Thanks to all our staff here for their efforts and also the Brisbane stable for the work they did with him before he came down.
